When selecting glasses, you have a few decisions to make. Which material is best for you? Will your lenses be tinted? How about an anti-reflective coating? And finally if a multifocal is needed, what type? This page contains links to helpful information to assist you. Our informed and courteous staff will review these options when you visit our optical.

Our Salem facility has an in house optical lab featuring the Gerber-Coburn KAPPA system (shown on left). This system has a patented 3-D edging system which allows the most precise frame tracing, lens mapping and edge sizing ever. Your lenses fit better into your frame with this system! We also specialize in allowing our patients to use their existing frames for new lenses without having to give up their frame! We also have the ability at our Salem office to cut down most lenses into a new frame when our patients have a broken frame and need a quick resolution of their problem. This re-edging typically takes our lab around 20 minutes.

MULTIFOCAL

Near the age of 40, a condition known as Presbyopia develops. It’s a natural part of aging which makes it difficult to focus on things close. Since the days of Ben Franklin, the solution to this has been bifocals. These types of lenses are now outdated. Not only do they have an unsightly line, they also require you to pick your chin up to read . However, the biggest limitation is that there is no clear vision at intermediate distances ( such as a car dashboard, shelve at a grocery store, bank ATM machine, computer screen ). During the 1900's, trifocal lenses were created in an attempt to give some limited intermediate vision by placing two lined sections in the lens. These were hard to walk in and required significant up and down head movement for their use.

Designed in 2003, DEFINITY™  lenses are progressive addition lenses that give you outstanding vision at all distances ( far, intermediate and near ) without any visible bifocal line! With you see sharper and see wider (30% wider field of vision than other progressives). There are many progressives on the market today but only one DEFINITY™ ! There are lenses out there that copy some of the basic design concepts of DEFINITY™ but it can not be duplicated. DEFINITY™ multi-patented lens design gives you a wider range of vision with less head movement. DEFINITY™ Lenses are the only progressive lens that use a new patented, two-surface (DUAL ADD Technology), offset design to split the add power between the front and back of the lens for advanced optics. It has the least amount of peripheral distortion ever. DEFINITY™ offers our patient's the natural vision they had before they turned 40! It is an excellent choice even for those who are active with sports or even for those who work at a computer! We recommend this state-of-the art lens for everyone. If you wonder how good the lens is, consider these facts. A clinical study showed that 97 % of bifocal wearers preferred DEFINITY™.  Patients learn to use today's state of the art progressives typically within their first two hours of ownership! With technology this advanced, there is no reason to wear bifocals anymore ! Ask us about  DEFINITY™ at your next visit. You’ll be glad you did !

ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATING

Have you ever wished you had better sight at night? Does lighting from oncoming vehicles cause difficulty with your night driving? Do you see glare from fluorescent lights or computer screens? Today's Super Anti-Reflection coatings (CRIZAL) are the answer to your problem. Super A-R is a premium multi-layer coating for spectacle lenses which includes quartz-like hardness and provides maximum glare reduction. Your lenses also gain a superior scratch coating in the process! The Super A-R coating is easier to clean than the older A-R coatings. They even make you look better because people see you when they look into your glasses instead of a mirror-like reflection.  Our Super A-R carries an extended warrantee against scratching! Ask us for details.

Transitions are tinted lenses that are photosensitive. They change their color based upon the amount of sunlight they detect. Since it’s latest introduction, Transitions have grown to become the most widely used plastic photochromic ever! Why? Compared to previous TRANSITION ® lenses, TRANSITIONS VI offers :

  • clearer than ever indoors ( you see better at night )

  • dark outside ( better comfort in the sun )

  • improved changeability in warm weather

  • available in ultra light & ultra-strong polycarbonate

  • available in regular plastic & ultra light plastic ( about 18 % lighter )

  • available in brown or gray

  •

And don’t forget that all TRANSITIONS ® lenses filter out harmful ultraviolet radiation so they are safer to wear when outside.

Traditional Tints

We also offer a custom tinted lens service we we can create "any color of the spectrum" in either a  solid tint, gradient tint (tinted at the top and clear at the bottom) or a double gradient tint (tinted one color at the top and fades into a different color at the bottom).
